Barcelona city hosts again an important sports event since the Olympics in 1992. Yesterday night we could assist to the open ceremony in the Magic Fountain of Montjuich and the revival of the Olympics was there although this event is only for the European countries.
The past months the City Council has invested a lot of money despite the economic crisis in preparing and set up the equipments for this event and now they forecast to obtain a ROI (return of investment) of more than 42 million euros thanks to the 1000 hours of TV broadcast that will reach to more than 50 countries.
Hotels lobby begin to forecast a good summer season in Barcelona with a 76% of occupation as the majority of the public assistance is from outside Barcelona according to the ticketing figures they have til now.
You can adquire your ticket for the 6 days since 60 €, more information in the official website: www.bcn2010.org
Last week we had the chance to meet the website of Mr. Ugo Manzoni, an amateur photographer who loves Barcelona. He has built an archive of more than 400 photos and videos in which the difference you may find is the comparisson between the old and nowadays Barcelona’s photos, all them taken from the same view. For sure if you are interested in history and you like Barcelona, you will enjoy and love this website. Do you want to visit these places and do your own photos? Then check out our private tours, just at the left site of our menu or if you prefer send an email to info@livebarcelona.com
Barcelona is not only a beautiful city full of history and monuments to see when you come to visit us and also fine restaurants where you can enjoy one of the best gastronomies of the world. It is also a young city, worldwide tendences creator and an example of this are the following musical events: The Primavera Sound (27th. 29th. of May) and The Sonar (17th. and 19th. of June). First event is a mix between rock, pop and underground music and has become in 9 years an important reference with more than 74.000 followers in the past edition.
On the other hand, the Sonar presents itself as an International Festival for Advanced Music and Multimedia Arts and this Xacobeo’s year joins the festival the city of A Coruña, in Galicia, more than 1000 kms. far from Barcelona.

Spring is all over our city and this week we have to write in our agendas the following items: next friday 23rd. is Sant Jordi’ s day (Saint George) - remember the old legend of that handsome lord that killed the dragon and saved the princess? - The tradition not only in Barcelona, also all over Catalonia, is that all men have to buy a red rose to their women (wife, mother, grandmother, sisters, friends, etc) and women have to buy a book to the men. This is why all the streets in all the catalans cities and villages will be full of little shops selling both products (average price of a rose is 3-5 €) and all catalans go for a walk during the evening if the April’s weather permits it (it is forecasted rain). More things to be considered this week in Barcelona is the Open Godó of tennis and in two weeks, the Spanish Grand Prix of Formula 1. By the way: the BCN airport has been re-opened and it works with normality, no problem with the volcanic cloud.

Yesterday night the Football club Barcelona won its third Champions League against Manchester United of Mr. Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson. The red-blue team played its best style, like no other can do right now in the world, and finish an incredible year with the three most important titles: Liga (Spanish Championship), King’s Cup (of Spain) and the Champions League.
Congratulations to the team, players and all supporters from all over the world!
From several years ago, during the spring season Barcelona has the privilege of being in the top list of cities of the world that receive and organize some of the world’s major sports events.
Some examples are: “Trofeo Conde de Godó” Tennis Tournament (once again the 2009 winner is our local ATP number 1 Rafa Nadal), Formula1 “Gran Premio de España” (8, 9 and 10th of May), Champions League with our soccer team, F.C.Barcelona playing the Final against the Manchester United next May 27th in Rome and MOTOGP “Gran Premio de Catalunya” on June 14th.
This important sports offer can be, most of the times, the trip complement for many of the visitors that come to Barcelona now or even, in some other cases, is just the reason why they come to our city. If you need any kind of information or advising regarding these events, do not hesitate in asking us:
Sant Jordi (St. George) is the National Heroe of Catalonia. The legend explains he fighted against the dragon and rescued the beautiful princess.
This date is very popular in Catalonia - and all the Catalans we are very proud of it- because represents the esence and rooths of the Catalan nation and its culture. In the past decades, the marketing has amplified the international impact of this special tradition: men give a rose as a present to women and women give a book, as well as a present, to men. An special reccommendation if you are in Barcelona this date: go for a walk to the Ramblas street in the evening and enjoy with the flowers and books shops in the middle of the street. For sure you will be impressed and even you will feel as a local!
